Originally introduced in 1908 and inspired by famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens' newly redesigned Eagle and Double Eagle gold coins, the Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle was completed by Boston sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. Pratt's Native American motif was a nod to the late Saint-Gaudens' design for the larger coins after his death from cancer in August 1907. The Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagles were minted from 1908 to 1915. Minting was halted due to the increased use of banknotes in the East and the rising price of gold as the United States entered into World War I.

The Mint resumed production of the Quarter Eagle beginning in 1925 at the Denver Mint and then exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint from 1926 to 1929. The coin was officially retired after the economic collapse of 1929 that led to the Great Depression.

The revolutionary incuse design, with a level surface and all high-relief design elements recessed below, gives the Indian Head Quarter Eagles and Half Eagles the unique distinction as the only incuse design in United States circulated currency history. The obverse of the coin depicts the profile of a Native American man in a ceremonial feathered headdress. The inscriptions "LIBERTY, " "1926" and 13 stars, honoring the first 13 American colonies, surround the profile with a tiny inscription of "BLP" above the mint year to give credit to the sculptor. The reverse of the coin depicts the proud American bald eagle on a stack of arrows with an olive branch grasped in its left talon.

The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, " E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST, " along with the Quarter Eagle denomination "2 1/2 DOLLARS, complete the reverse design.
